BTN is conducting a series of interviews with the Board of Ed Candidates to find out more about them and what they stand for. We are also including their Top 5…  We asked the candidates to be creative in their top 5. This can be from their top 5 things, top 5 sports, etc…

Our first candidate to participate is  Rona McNabola, incumbent.  Ms. McNabola has been with the Glen Rock BOE for 30 years.

1. Why are you rerunning for the BOE?

I am running for re-election in order to continue participating in the process of education in GR.  I feel that this is something I am good at—I do my homework and listen to the opinions of others before making an informed decision.  I would like the school district to keep moving forward in order to serve all the children—we must continue to update our courses and prepare all of the students for the world of the future.  At the same time, we must balance the costs of the students’ education with the reality of the constraints of the finances of the district.

2. Why do you think you are a good fit for the BOE?

Over the years I have been able to work with the various members of the board in coming to consensus on school issues.  I have the experience the district needs for the decisions to be made in the upcoming years.

3. What do you think are some of the top issues you would like to see accomplished in your next term for the school district? and why are they important?

The 2 things most important for the success of the district are negotiating a contract with the GREA this coming year in a timely manner and selecting a new permanent Superintendent with a vision and goals to keep us excelling.

4. Please tell us something unique about you.

I guess what is most unique is that I was a member of the executive committee of the NJ State Interscholastic Athletic Association for many years and served terms as President and Vice President even though I personally never participated in sports.  I was also inducted into the Eastside High School Hall of Fame.

5. Are there any changes you would like to see the school district look at? and why?

I want Glen Rock to remain a great school district that attracts people to move to Glen Rock,  In order to do this we must make sure that we do not have change without the proper process. The educational changes must be developed by the educators we hire.  A change I am looking forward to is to focus more on the students’ futures beyond graduation— be it college, trade school, or the workforce.  In doing this we must also focus on their current emotional needs at every grade level.
As far as the facilities go, I have been in favor of looking to have a referendum which included air-conditioning upgrades for the elementary schools as well as more solar panels on the schools buildings which can have them.
