Expectations high as GRHS Wrestling team opens season Saturday
With 10 seniors, Panthers look to improve on last season's 16-10 record
Expectations are high for Glen Rock High School’s wrestling team in its third season as an independent program following an 11-year co-op experience with Saddle Brook. The Panthers open their 2017-18 season Saturday at the Mahwah tournament with an eye on bettering last season’s 16-10 dual match record and state tournament playoff appearance.
Coach Corey Fitzpatrick’s squad lost only two varsity wrestlers from last year’s squad – captains Tim Schmitt and Kevin Pinzoni – to graduation, and return 10 starters. Senior captains Kyle Fisher (152 pounds) and Matt Sapoff (138) lead a veteran squad that boasts 11 seniors and, according to Fitzpatrick, has aspirations of winning 20 dual matches and challenging for the Bergen County Group D team title.
Besides Fisher (22 wins a year ago) and Sapoff (15 wins) the lineup features seniors Jacob Slump, who qualified for the Region tournament last season at 220 pounds, and will wrestle at either 195 or 220 this season, Jimmy Gilmartin back at 285 pounds, Will Scherer back at 182, Ricky Correa (145), Conor Egan (152), Nick D’Amato (132), Josh Murray (132), Matt Fellini (126) and Andy Hwang (126). Junior Ben Or-Chen, who had 19 wins last year, most at 106, will bump up to 120 this season, while sophomore Greg Schlett (17 wins last season) returns at 160. Junior Terence O’Toole, steps in at 170 pounds, while sophomores Ryan Romeo (106), Bryan Novick (113) and Owen Stephenson (126) round out the squad.
Following Saturday’s tournament, the dual season begins Wednesday at home against Mahwah, beginning at 6 p.m.
**editor’s note, this story was updated to add Conor Egan’s name to the roster and correct the number of seniors on the roster to 11.
